Steelers HC Mike Tomlin on the botched fake: ‘It’s on me’

Mike Tomlin takes the heat for the botched fake field goal.

Thankfully, the failed fake field-goal attempt by Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell didn’t cost the Steelers the win over the Cleveland Browns. It did give Boswell a concussion and his status for next week’s game will be up in the air all week.

But for head coach Mike Tomlin, he could speak freely about it because despite how badly it went, it did not ultimately impact the outcome of the game. This gave Tomlin the freedom to fall on his sword for it, thank his team for picking him up and moving on from it.

Was the timing of the call terrible? Absolutely. Was the execution of the play worse? For sure. But ultimately, the Browns read the fake and covered it perfectly. This put Boswell in an impossible situation. If the play works, no one questions Tomlin’s decision to do it but when the team gets back together the conversation has to be about what to do when things go wrong.

Steelers elevate LB Taco Charlton from practice squad

The Steelers have added a pass rusher for this week’s game.

With outside linebacker Melvin Ingram downgraded to out this week versus the Cleveland Browns, the Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves very thin at outside linebacker.

To help with this problem, the Steelers have elevated former first-round pick Taco Charlton from the practice squad for this week’s game per ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler.

It was reported earlier in the week that Ingram wasn’t happy with his playing time and wanted traded. It feels like the Steelers could give him his wish and it would be much easier to absorb the loss if Charlton can show this week he can play.

Steelers vs Browns: What to expect when Pittsburgh is on defense

The Steelers defense has to focus on stopping the Browns run game.

This week the Pittsburgh Steelers defense comes to Cleveland to face the power running Browns team after showing a real weakness to the run in its last game. Pittsburgh cannot afford to lose this matchup so here’s what we expect to see when the Steelers are on defense.

Steelers vs Browns: What to expect when Pittsburgh is on offense

The Steelers offense faces a tough challenge this week against the Browns.

This week the Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off of the bye and have to contend with a stout Cleveland Browns defense. We have seen the evolution of the Pittsburgh offense in recent weeks thanks to improved offensive line play and more confidence in the system of offensive coordinator Matt Canada. What kind of tricks and treats will Canada have for the Browns defense on Halloween?

Steelers LB Melvin Ingram Listed as DOUBTFUL vs Browns

The Steelers could be very thin at outside linebacker versus the Browns.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, there’s a good chance they will go it without outside linebacker Melvin Ingram. The team put out the game status report and Ingram is listed as doubtful with a groin injury.

Ingram has seen his snaps diminish every week since having a strong opening weekend game against the Buffalo Bills. Rumors are swirling that Ingram’s representatives have reached out to the team requesting a trade. Could Ingram’s status have anything to do with this? Time will tell. It is unclear how the Steelers will replace Ingram in the lineup if he cannot play. Derrek Tuszka is the only other outside linebacker on the roster and a relative unknown. Pittsburgh does have former first-round pick Taco Charlton on the practice squad and could promote him this week.

The only other injury of note for the Steelers is tight end Eric Ebron. He popped up on the injury report in the middle of the week with a hamstring injury and is listed as out for this week’s game. All other Steelers who were limted through the week are a full go versus the Browns.

Steelers TE Eric Ebron OUT vs Browns

The Steelers won’t have Eric Ebron for this week’s game.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=none image=https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Pittsburgh Steelers released its game-status report for this week’s game against the Cleveland Browns. The big name on the list is tight end Eric Ebron who was listed midweek with a hamstring injury and will miss Sunday’s game.

Ebron has been at the center of some controversy this week as he was somewhat vocal about his lack of reps and targets so far this season. Ebron has become part of a three-man tight end rotation for Pittsburgh with rookie Pat Freiermuth and veteran Zach Gentry.

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders just how hurt Ebron is and is he sitting this week because the Steelers plan to ship him off in a trade after Sunday’s game. But I’m probably reading too much into this. We will know soon enough.

AFC North roundup: Looking ahead at each team’s next 3 games

There could be a huge logjam near the top of the AFC North in the next month.

The Pittsburgh Steelers currently sit at 3-3 and are in last place in the crowded AFC North. However, they are just barely out of the playoff picture in the AFC.

Looking ahead at the next three games, the Steelers are in a great position, with a win this week to be 6-3 after nine games and have the season back on track. But where will the team sit in the division? Let’s look at the next three games for all four teams.

Browns injury report massive for Wednesday practice

The Browns had a massive injury report on Wednesday.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=none image=https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

On Wednesday the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns got back to work in preparation for this week’s showdown. Pittsburgh put out it’s Wednesday practice report and it was largely clean. The same cannot be said for the Browns who had 17 players list as either limited or DNP.

Here is the full list:

DE Jadeveon Clowney (Ankle, Goin, Knee) – DNP
DE Malik Jackson (Ankle) – DNP
S Richard LeCounte III (Not Injury Related) – DNP
WR Jarvis Landry (Knee) – DNP
WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (Groin) – DNP
CB Denzel Ward (Hamstring) – DNP
WR Odell Beckham Jr. (Shoulder) – Limited
RB Nick Chubb (Calf) – Limited
T Jack Conklin (Knee) – Limited
LB Tony Fields II (Illness) – Limited

QB Baker Mayfield (Left Shoulder) – Limited
LB Malcolm Smith (Abdomen) – Limited
C JC Tretter (Knee) – Limited
T Jedrick Wills Jr. (Ankle) – Limited

We should know more tomorrow but that is quite a list of potential starters on both sides of the football for the Browns headlined by quarterback Baker Mayfield, running back Nick Chubb and wide receivers Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr.
