If the Steelers want to beat the Vikings they have to ride that wave of momentum from last week.

Love it or hate it, Thursday Night Football isn’t going away. It’s never the prettiest football but secretly no one ever wants it to go away. This week the Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping to ride the momentum of last week’s win over the Baltimore Ravens into Minnesota and extend the win streak to two against the Vikings. Here are the Steelers keys to victory and my prediction that’s sure to go wrong.

Steelers shuffle practice squad roster for Week 14

The Steelers signed a punter and a long snapper to the practice squad on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced a handful of practice squad roster moves. The main one being the addition of punter Drue Chrisman to the practice squad.

Chrisman’s college career was at Ohio State where he averaged 44.6 yards per punt over the span of 21 games and two seasons. He was signed originally by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2021 and he has been on and off of their practice squad.

This was likely in response to the struggles by starting punter Pressley Harvin III in recent weeks. The Steelers also signed long snapper Rex Sunahara to the practice squad.

To make room for both guys, Pittsburgh terminated the contracts of defensive backs Linden Stephens and wide receiver Tyler Vaughns.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday, they will do so without several key players. The team announced the game status for players who were listed on the injury report during the week.

Pittsburgh has four players listed at out including starting guard B.J. Finney and starting cornerback Joe Haden. The list also includes linebacker Robert Spillane and defensive end Isaiah Buggs.

CB Joe Haden (Foot)
LB Robert Spillane (Knee)
OL B.J. Finney (Back)
DE Isaiah Buggs (Ankle)

Based on last week, Haden will be replaced in the starting lineup by Ahkello Witherspoon. With Finney out, swing lineman John Leglue should get the start. As for Spillane, he came off the Reserve/COVID-19 list this week but is still dealing with a knee injury. Buggs’ reps will likely go to newly acquired defensive tackle Montravius Adams.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger says no one likes TNF but the NFL

Ben Roethlisberger talks about the problems with preparing to play on a short week.

Last week the Pittsburgh Steelers pulled off a huge upset win over the Baltimore Ravens. But instead of enjoying the win, Pittsburgh now has to scramble to prepare to take on the Minnesota Vikings on the road on Thursday Night Football.

Thursday night games are a mess. Teams are never rested and recovered from the week before, don’t have adequate time to put a proper game plan together and are often sloppy, ugly football. But as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger noted in his Tuesday press conference, no one likes these games but the league because of all the money they make.

For his career, Roethlisberger is 9-5 on Thursday nights. He averages 280.6 yards per game, completes 66.7 percent of his passes and has a 107.3 quarterback rating. This is significantly higher than his 93.8 career rating. It just goes to show that when you are a seasoned veteran and a future Hall of Famer, you understand the importance of stepping up when the rest of your team might not be all in.

Steelers vs Vikings: RB Dalvin Cook limited, WR Adam Thielen DNP on Tuesday

Here’s an update on the Vikings injury situation.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=none image=https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

When the Pittsburgh Steelers square off against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night, the Steelers defense will need another effort like last Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. Based on the Vikings Tuesday practice report, things might not be awful for the Steelers D this week.

Starting offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw and starting wide receiver Adam Thielen both missed Tuesday’s practice. These are excellent players who the Vikings need in the lineup. Much like the Steelers, the Vikings are thin at multiple spots with wide receiver and offensive tackle being near the top of the list.

The Vikings also saw running back Dalvin Cook limited on Tuesday. This issue seems less significant with the continued emergence of third-year running back Alexander Mattison back to full health. This isn’t to say Minnesota doesn’t want Cook back but on a short week, this one might not happen.

Steelers practice squad: Pittsburgh protects 4 players for Week 14

The Steelers protected four players, including Anthony Miller, for their Week 14 matchup with the Vikings.

The NFL carried over some successful rules from the 2020 season, including practice squad protections. Teams can protect up to four of the most valued players on their practice squad each week, preventing them from being signed by other teams.

Teams that play on Sundays can designate protected players each Tuesday at 4 p.m. Teams that play on Mondays designate players each Wednesday. Protected players are not eligible to sign with another team until after that week’s game.

Here are the four players the Pittsburgh Steelers protected on their practice squad for Week 14 versus the Minnesota Vikings:

Steelers vs Vikings: Early causes for concern this week

Will the Steelers be able to get back up for this game after last week?

The Pittsburgh Steelers got a much-needed win on Sunday over the AFC North-leading Baltimore Ravens to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. But there’s no time to celebrate as the Steelers have to now immediately turn around and travel to Minnesota to take on the Vikings on Thursday night. Here is what we are worried about this week.
