MOSEL, Wis. – Whistling Straits’ Straits Course, home of the Ryder Cup on Sept. 24-26, is one of the most dramatic visual treats in golf.

Built by Pete Dye on the shore of Lake Michigan, the formerly flat site once housed a military base before the legendary designer trucked in some 13,000 loads of sand to shape an incredible vista of flowing dunes, fescue grass and incredibly difficult golf shots.

Golfweek’s Gabe Gudgel has shot aerial drone videos of each hole to get you ready for the Ryder Cup. Video of one hole will be released each day for 18 days. Today’s hole is No. 4, which will play as a 489-yard par 4 for the matches between the U.S. and Europe.

Mike O’Reilly, the golf operations manager at Whistling Straits, has provided commentary on each hole. He began his career at Destination Kohler’s sister club, Blackwolf Run, as a caddie before Whistling Straits even opened, and he has had a front-row seat to all the action in three previous PGA Championships. His insights are invaluable.

The Straits will play as a par 71 at 7,390 yards for the Ryder Cup. It’s normally a par 72, but the par-5 11th will be shortened to a par 4 for the event. The Straits ranks as the No. 1 public-access course in Wisconsin on Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play list, as well as No. 8 among all of Golfweek’s Best Modern Courses in the U.S.

With Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples chosen as Ryder Cup vice captains, where does that leave Tiger Woods?

U.S. captain Steve Stricker now has five assistant captains for this month’s matches.

ATLANTA – Phil Mickelson is going to the Ryder Cup.

As a vice captain, not as a player.

A tweet from the PGA of America’s Ryder Cup USA feed said Wednesday Mickelson and 1992 Masters champion Fred Couples have joined Team USA for the Ryder Cup Sept. 24-26 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

“I’ve been staying in close contact with both Freddie and Phil, talking about all things Ryder Cup, for a while now,” U.S. captain Steve Stricker said in a release linked to the tweet. “They provide honest and impactful feedback, and both have such a passion for the Ryder Cup.”

Stricker now has five assistant captains. The PGA of American confirmed that each team can only have five assistants per the agreement between the U.S. and Europe, so this means Tiger Woods will not be with the team as an assistant.

The other three assistant captains are 2012 and 2016 Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III, 2018 Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk and Zach Johnson.

Mickelson, 51, had played in 12 consecutive editions of the Ryder Cup, his debut coming in 1995. The six-time major champion, winner of 45 PGA Tour titles and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame became the oldest player to win a major championship at this year’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island.

Unfortunately, it was only one solid week – he didn’t have another top 10 in 2021. Mickelson spoke openly of his desire to make the team as a captain’s pick, but his last gasp efforts included a missed cut in the Northern Trust and a tie for 66th in the BMW Championship in the first two FedEx Cup Playoffs events.

In his U.S. record 12 appearances, he was 18-22-7 in a U.S. record 47 matches.

Couples, a winner of 15 PGA Tour titles, will be making his second appearance as a vice captain after serving in 2012. In his five editions as a player, he was 7-9-4.

Patrick Cantlay, who won last week’s BMW Championship, inadvertently said during his victory press conference that Couples was going to be an assistant.

“I’m excited,” Cantlay said when asked about securing an automatic spot on U.S. team with his win in the BMW Championship. “Fred Couples texted me this week and said it looks like he’s going to be one of the assistant captain, and so he’ll be up there.”

Cantlay is one of six automatics, the others being Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, and Brooks Koepka.

Stricker will make six captain’s picks Sept. 8.

“These pieces are meant to be worn time and time again, not just for one weekend out of the year,” said Love.

Meet half the team that will represent Team USA at the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits

Check out the six automatic qualifiers for Team USA at the upcoming Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker welcomed a half-dozen players to the Stars & Stripes fold Sunday night at the end of play at the BMW Championship. The tournament concluded the qualifying period for the U.S., with the top-six players in the points standings automatically earning a spot on the team that will face Europe, Sept. 24-26, at Whistling Straights in Wisconsin.

Five of the six – Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and Justin Thomas – already were assured spots on the team before the BMW Championship began. The sixth spot was secured by Patrick Cantlay, who beat DeChambeau in a 6-hole playoff Sunday to win the BMW Championship.

“I love the six guys we have right now,” Stricker told Golfweek. “I love what I’m seeing, a lot of the guys playing well late in the season, a lot of guys in form right now.”

Stricker will round out his squad by making six discretionary selections following play in the upcoming week’s Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.

On the other side of the pond, nine players – four off the European points list and five off the World points list – will automatically make the team at the conclusion of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sept. 12. Europe captain Padraig Harrington will make three discretionary picks following the tournament.

On paper, Stricker’s automatics would make the U.S. the favorite, as all six are ranked in the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking; only Cantlay hasn’t won a major championship; and Johnson, Koepka and Thomas have reached No. 1 in the world.

In the air, the team could unload plenty of firepower on the massive course at Whistling Straits, as Johnson, DeChambeau, Koepka, Thomas and Cantlay are among the game’s longest players.

Closer to the ground, Morikawa is on the short list of the game’s best iron players, with Thomas in the discussion, as well. And the other four ain’t chopped liver.

On the experience side, only Morikawa and Cantlay have yet to play in the Ryder Cup.

Putting, on the other hand, doesn’t look to be a strength on paper. Then again, DeChambeau is in the top 35 on the PGA Tour in total putting and Cantlay just made 537 feet of putts to win the BMW Championship.

Stricker, who will go to The Tour Championship, said he will get together with the six automatics for input on the team the six captain’s picks and possible partnerships.

“I want to know what they are thinking,” Stricker said. “They’re out there living this every day and they know what’s going on and who’s playing well and who would be good fits as partners.

“I want to know where their heads are at.”

Lynch: U.S. needs Steve Stricker to use Ryder Cup picks to buck the buddy system that made him captain

Steve Stricker’s choices will reveal whether the U.S. is investing in its future stars or remains hostage to a faded legend.

By the time Steve Stricker makes his Ryder Cup captain’s picks after next week’s Tour Championship, the COVID-compromised qualification process to determine his troops will have lasted longer than the Siege of Leningrad—924 days to be exact. But Stricker will be announcing more than just six additional names on his roster. His choices will reveal whether the U.S. is investing in its future stars or remains hostage to a faded legend who isn’t eager to cede center stage.

Five players are already guaranteed places on the team to face Europe next month at Whistling Straits: Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas. The last automatic qualifier is determined Sunday after the BMW Championship. That’s currently Tony Finau, but might become Patrick Cantlay. Both are likely locks for Stricker’s squad, as are two players just beyond automatic slots: Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth.

Which means skipper Stricker is really down to three picks. The decisions he makes will indicate the extent to which the buddy system that installed him still holds sway over Team U.S.A.

You’d have to search hard to find a negative sentiment about Stricker. He’s a consummate professional and unfailingly courteous. Since he was announced as captain 30 months ago, there have been whispers that he’s too nice for the job, which is to fundamentally misunderstand the prevailing dynamic of the U.S. team. Amiability is not an impediment to being captain; it’s a requirement.

It has been since Tom Watson’s tumultuous tenure in 2014. Watson was 65 and decidedly old school in his attitude to patriotism and performance. Seeing the Stars and Stripes raised was all the motivation a man should need. He wasn’t going to hug them and reassure them about how special they were, nor let them choose with whom they played and how often.

The fallout from that U.S. defeat and Phil Mickelson’s press conference coup led to the establishment of the oft-mocked task force. On paper, the task force was an effort to crowdsource the captaincy, and every skipper appointed since sat on that panel. In reality, it created a rotating door on the locker room, as every exiting captain—winner or loser—is recycled by his successor. Davis Love III had Jim Furyk and Stricker as vice-captains in 2016. Furyk’s deputies in ’18 included Love and Stricker. No prizes for guessing two names on Stricker’s backroom team this year. The loyalty of task force members to their own is what makes Mickelson’s role a compelling subplot this week. After all, this was Phil’s task force, oversubscribed with people who hold Mickelson in high regard, not least his ownself.

Mickelson has made modest noises about being undeserving of a spot on Stricker’s team. He said similar things in ’18. He didn’t mean it then and he doesn’t mean it now. Furyk picked Mickelson and he lost both sessions he played. There are reasons why Stricker might do as his successor did.

Mickelson won a major in 2021, and not just any major but one owned by the guys who own the Ryder Cup. He has a wealth of experience, having played every Cup since 1995. The counter arguments—his PGA Championship victory was a supernova moment in an otherwise dark sky over recent years, and his experience is mostly of losing (18 wins from 47 matches)—might not be persuasive for Stricker.

Team U.S.A. has one guaranteed rookie (Morikawa) and will probably have another two in Schauffele and Cantlay. More potential first-timers have made a case for selection: Harris English, Daniel Berger, Scottie Scheffler, Billy Horschel, Jason Kokrak, Sam Burns and Kevin Kisner. A couple of credible veterans are in the mix too, with Patrick Reed and Webb Simpson. All of the aforementioned placed ahead of Mickelson in the qualification standings. But those standings are irrelevant once the final putt falls at the BMW Championship, and that’s when Stricker starts to look at the intangibles.

Mickelson is a binding agent in the team room, a mentor to some of the younger players and a gleeful tormentor of them in friendly money matches. His experience in the cauldron of the Ryder Cup will aid nervous teammates. But none of those attributes requires his clubs. Mickelson would be an excellent vice-captain and Stricker should name him to that position soon after the automatic qualifiers are finalized, thereby removing him from the pool of potential picks in a respectful manner.

The U.S. captain has been presented with circumstances that he needs to exploit. While Tiger Woods is recuperating, other mainstays of the squad—Zach Johnson, Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar—are, like Mickelson, struggling for form. Now is the moment for Stricker to make an unapologetic and defensible all-in bet on the next generation of young, hungry guys eager to prove their worth.

If Stricker announces Mickelson’s name for anything other than a backroom position, it’s evidence that the stale task force buddy system endures, and that America’s Ryder Cup team, rather like its two main political parties, just can’t bring itself to pass the baton to a new generation to forge a brighter future.

Ryder Cup: The build-out at Whistling Straits is virtually double what it was to host the PGA Championship

The Ryder Cup is bigger than anything seen on this two-mile slice of land along Lake Michigan.

HAVEN, Wisconsin — On a bright, sunny day in August, you can almost hear the noise and imagine the scene that will soon envelop this corner of the Badger State.

You climb the stands of a temporary stadium being constructed on three sides of the first tee box on the Straits course, look out over the hole and see hospitality chalets draped alongside the fairway. And out beyond the green, you glimpse Lake Michigan, shimmering in the distance.

It’s quiet now. There are workers in the bleachers and golfers on the course.

But come next month, this hole and all the rest of this splendid property will be crammed with noisy, jubilant spectators gathered at Whistling Straits to see the best American and European golfers compete for the 43rd Ryder Cup.

Postponed a year by the coronavirus pandemic, the build-out for the Ryder Cup is taking shape.

It is a gargantuan project, scaled to host up to 45,000 people a day — a population roughly the size of Fond du Lac.

“We’re essentially building a city here,” said Brandon Haney, operations manager for the Ryder Cup.

Practice rounds begin Sept. 21, the opening ceremony is Sept. 23 and the matches unfold over three drama-filled days, Sept. 24-26.

The Europeans won the last Ryder Cup in 2018.

[listicle id=778053253]

Whistling Straits has been a host for major golf events in the past, including three PGA Championships.

But the Ryder Cup is bigger than anything seen on this two-mile slice of land along Lake Michigan.

An array of facilities blanket the hilly, links-style property, including a main gift shop larger than a football field. Yes, shopping is next to golfing at an event like this.

There’s more to come, including TV towers as the world tunes into the golfing spectacle.

“We’re bringing everything in from printers to WiFi, the restrooms, the catering, anything you can think of we essentially bring in,” Haney said.

Haney, 31, a DeForest native, has been on-site for three years, helping prepare for this moment. He’s part of a team with the PGA of America that works hand in hand with Destination Kohler, the hospitality and real estate arm of Kohler Co.

A University of Minnesota graduate, who played some football, Haney was an intern at his first Ryder Cup in 2012 as he was trying to break into the sports business.

On a tour of the course, Haney ticks off some numbers.

They’re building around 1.3 million square feet of temporary infrastructure — roughly double the square footage of the build-out for the 2015 PGA.

They’re also putting down 1 million square feet of carpet.

There’ll be seven miles worth of chain link fencing.

During the event, 500 golf carts and 1,000 radios will be used.

The build-out began May 24. Oak Creek-based Arena Americas is the major contractor erecting the site. Raleigh, North Carolina-based Stewart Sports and Events designed the project.

[vertical-gallery id=778130532]

It’s not an easy build, propping structures on an undulating site.

“The course itself makes it a challenge just from the elevation standpoint,” Haney said. “A lot of the floors out here are quite high to accommodate those elevation changes.”

Out by the 18th hole, workers are putting up bleachers.

“Really, we’re getting to the point where we’re transitioning from the large structure construction to the detailed work, so you’ll start to see the red mesh going up on the scaffolding, the white picket fence going up along the walkways,” he said.

If there’s a downtown for this temporary city, it’s a place called Dye Plaza, named after the late Pete and Alice Dye. It was Pete Dye who designed the famed courses here.

At Dye Plaza, there will be a bus terminal, the main entry, a bar, concessions, pavilions, an information tent for the next Ryder Cup in Rome, and a tent for some of the 4,000 volunteers who are instrumental to stage the event.

The opening ceremony will also be held here, so there’s still a stage to be built in an amphitheater.

All of it is designed to highlight an event that is among golf’s most storied competitions.

So, what will opening day be like when the U.S. faces off against Europe?

Haney envisions a rush of fans trying to get to the seats at the 1st tee.

“Everyone wants to get there,” he said. “Friday morning, 7 a.m.”

Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau playing nice for a whole week? Steve Stricker trusts them to do so.

Stricker needs the two to play nice as the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits is fast approaching.

The feud has simmered for months, with Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka keeping all eyes focused on their growing animosity.

Some have hinted that the spat is partially fueled by greed — as the two continue to maintain a share of the spotlight they’re almost certainly positioning themselves for a large chunk of the $40 million Player Impact Program, previously unveiled by Golfweek’s reporting.

But Steve Stricker needs the two to play nice as the upcoming Ryder Cup is fast approaching at Whistling Straits.

Does Stricker, a mild-mannered Midwesterner, think that’s possible?

According to an interview he did this week with Sports Illustrated, he thinks it’s more than just possible — he’s expecting it.

[listicle id=778108553]

“They assured me that the team and the country and everything else that goes into this is their [top priority],” Stricker told Sports Illustrated. “They said it’s not going to be an issue, and I believe them. I trust them. As far as I’m concerned, it’s been put to bed.

“We haven’t heard Brooks say anything about Bryson lately. This Ryder Cup means a lot to these guys. Neither one wants to be the root of a problem. They both understand.”

Of course, Koepka has insisted in the past that the small stretch shouldn’t be difficult to stomach. In fact, he previously said he can handle anyone for a short duration.

“You realize it’s only a week, right?” Koepka said back in July when asked about the topic. “Look, I can put it aside for business. If we’re going to be on the same team, I can deal with anybody in the world for a week. I’m not playing with him. I’m pretty sure we’re not going to be paired together; put it that way. We’re not going to be high-fiving and having late-night conversations. I do my thing; he does his thing.

“It’s not an issue at all. I don’t view it as an issue. I don’t think he does. Like I said, I can put anything aside for a team, business, whatever, just to get the job done. No problem with that.”

Koepka has always been the more cagey of the two, the one who drops subtle jabs after DeChambeau does something bold.

For example, when DeChambeau took aim at Cobra earlier this summer, saying his driver “sucks,” Koepka quickly responded by saying. “Drove the ball great. I love my driver.”

Although he’s not a bombastic soul, could Stricker do something drastic and defy Koepka’s word by teaming the two together? It’s highly doubtful.

“I’m not going to tell you there’s no chance,” Stricker told SI. “But I don’t see it happening, no. I don’t think they want to play together.”
