Steelers lay down a Bengal beatdown to go to 9-0

The Pittsburgh Steelers came out and dominated the Cincinnati Bengals this week.

Last week all the Pittsburgh Steelers heard was how they weren’t as good as their record and with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, this matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals was anything but a gimmie.

The Steelers took all that to heart and despite a less-than-perfect game, dominated Cincinnati 36-10.

The story of the game was Roethlisberger. After sitting at home all week and unable to workout with the team, Roethlisberger took total control of the game. Big Ben finished with 333 yards passing, four passing touchdowns and once again didn’t turn the football over.

Roethlisberger completed passes to seven different players including Diontae Johnson who hauled in six passes for 116 receiving yards and a touchdown. But he wasn’t along as JuJu Smith-Schuster caught nine passes and rookie receiver Chase Claypool caught two more touchdown passes.

On defense, Pittsburgh was once again too much for a rookie quarterback. On the season, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was averaging almost 300 yards a game but the Steelers held him to 213 yards and had him under duress almost all of the second half.

In addition, after getting gashed in the run game the past two weeks, the Steelers really asserted themselves there as well. The Bengals were only able to rush for 139 yards total and no back had 50 yards rushing.

Pittsburgh now travels to Jacksonville to take on the 1-8 Jaguars.

Steelers vs Bengals inactives: Pittsburgh only carrying 2 quarterbacks vs Cincinnati

Here are the inactives for this week’s game between the Steelers and Bengals.

[jwplayer JZtzT24f-ThvAeFxT]

Inactives for the Pittsburgh Steelers are out and Pittsburgh has opted not to carry three quarterbacks this week against the Cincinnati Bengals. There was the thought that with Ben Roethlisberger a little banged up after a week off Pittsburgh may choose to keep Joshua Dobbs in uniform to hedge their bets.

But he is among the inactives which include rookie running back Anthony McFarland Jr., cornerback Mike Hilton, linebacker Jayrone Elliott and nose tackle Isaiah Buggs.

Buggs being inactive means the team will finally get Tyson Alualu back in the lineup. There’s also no mention of fullback Derek Watt which could be great news for the run game on a rainy day.

McFarland has missed time this past week with illness but he has not been added to the Reserve/COVID-19 list. One player who is on the list is tight end Vance McDonald. This means Zach Gentry gets a helmet today and should see action early in two tight-end sets.

Here are the Bengals inactives.

  • DT Geno Atkins
  • CB LeShaun Sims
  • RT Bobby Hart
  • HB Joe Mixon
  • G Keaton Sutherland
  • K Austin Seibert

Steelers vs Bengals: 3 bold predictions for this week’s game

Here are the Steelers Wire bold predictions for this week’s game.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are finally back home and you can bet they are ready to feast on some home cooking. This week the Cincinnati Bengals come to town and Pittsburgh has a chance to do something never done before in franchise history. With a win, the team will go to 9-0 and maintain control in the AFC playoff race.

Here are our three bold predictions for this weeks’ gam.

Steelers’ Tyson Alualu expected return should be huge for Pittsburgh’s run defense

The Steelers defense has been gashed by opposing runners since Alualu’s absence.

The Steelers defense was dealt a major blow early in their Week 8 matchup versus the Baltimore Ravens when tackle Tyson Alualu exited the game midway through the first quarter. Luckily, the knee injury was not serious as the run defense suffered in his absence.

After allowing only 280 total rush yards in four consecutive games, the Steelers defense surrendered 409 yards in Weeks 8 and 9.

  • Games with Tyson Alualu (Weeks 1-7)
    • 413 total rush yards allowed
  • Games without Tyson Alualu (Weeks 8, 9)
    • 409 total rush yards allowed

Alualu was limited in practice on Tuesday and Wednesday and was a full participant on Friday. He is without a designation heading into Sunday’s game, so expect that he’ll be active.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin feels good about the progress his tackle made this week. “I think that Tyson [Alualu] is in a better place. His participation was a full one today,” said Tomlin in a press conference on Friday. “I have very little reservations regarding his abilities or availability, so he is a go.”

Alualu’s availability is just the injection the run defense needs to turn things around. The unit slipped three spots from first to fourth versus the run while he was out.

Steelers CB Mike Hilton not expected to play vs Bengals

It sounds like the Pittsburgh Steelers will be without their do-it-all defensive back Mike Hilton again this weekend.

[jwplayer JZtzT24f-ThvAeFxT]

The shoulder injury that has plagued Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Mike Hilton looks to be keeping him out of this week’s game with the Cincinnati Bengals. According to ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, Hilton, who is listed as questionable on the Steelers injury report isn’t expected to play.

Pittsburgh has learned to live life without Hilton over the last few weeks but his absence is less than ideal. Cameron Sutton is a solid replacement but doesn’t offer nearly the same amount of versatility that Hilton does. Hilton is a great slot cornerback whos isn’t shy about blitzing and stuffing the run. Hilton’s absence has had a hand in why Pittsburgh has played so much more zone than usual in recent weeks.

This injury is problematic for Hilton as well as he prepares to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. It doesn’t bode well for his value that he’s missed half of the season.

Steelers activate Ben Roethlisberger and Vince Williams from Reserve/COVID-19 list

The Pittsburgh Steelers got four players back off the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday.

[jwplayer JZtzT24f-ThvAeFxT]

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend, they won’t have to do it without their starting quarterback. As expected, Ben Roethlisberger, Vince Williams, Jerald Hawkins and Jaylen Samuels were all activated off of the Reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday morning.

The expectation is the Steelers will have an extended Saturday walkthrough, something more akin to their Friday practice just to fine-tune some things with Roethlisberger back in the fold.

One player who will not be coming off the COVID list this week is tight end Vance McDonald who tested positive. The other players involved in this were only placed on the list due to exposure with McDonald.

Another situation to monitor for this week is the status of running back Anthony McFarland and guard Kevin Dotson. Both players missed Friday practice with an illness designation but no details beyond that.

Steelers forced to be extra cautious with sick players

Two members of the Steelers missed practice for precautionary measures.

Preparations for this week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals has been quite challenging for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger among others has been unable to workout with the team due to being on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Now, according to head coach Mike Tomlin, two more players are being held out as a precaution. Running back Anthony McFarland has missed the last two days with what was characterized as an illness and on Friday the Steelers also held out rookie guard Kevin Dotson as a precaution.

The Steelers have to be overly cautious at this point after the situation last week with tight end Vance McDonald. McDonald was sick prior to the Steelers game against the Baltimore Ravens. The team had him travel and on the Monday after the game, he tested positive for COVID-19.
