Steelers offense continues to struggle as Pittsburgh trails at halftime

It was an ugly first half for the Steelers.

The Cincinnati Bengals are 0-10. Let that sink in a minute. But regardless of the record, the Bengals have found a way to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers 7-3 at halftime. And once again it is an anemic offense letting the team down.

Injuries have torn this offensive roster apart. Without running back James Conner and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, the offense is minus its two most consistent weapons. This has proven to be a disaster for quarterback Mason Rudolph who continues to struggle.

Rudolph has only 85 passing yards at halftime. His inability of move in the pocket or even be aware of the pass rush has made it almost impossible to sustain drives. Even when Rudolph isn’t under pressure his throws have been off the mark.

The Steelers defense is doing its best to try to keep the game close. However, if the offense can’t pick things up and put together a couple of scoring drives, Cincinnati might get its first win of the season.

Steelers inactives: James Conner and JuJu Smith-Schuster inactive

No surprises among the Steelers inactives.

Inactives are out for the Pittsburgh Steelers and there are no surprises. The Steelers are preparing to square off with the Cincinnati Bengals and they will be doing it without their starting running back and wide receiver.

The full list of Steelers inactives:

RB James Conner

WR JuJu Smith-Schuster

QB Paxton Lynch

CB Artie Burns

LB Tuzar Skipper

OT Chuks Okorafor

TE Zach Gentry

Luckily the Steelers will have wide receiver Diontae Johnson who was cleared from concussion protocol. Pittsburgh also gets running back Benny Snell Jr. back this week but it’s hard to predict how effective he will be after a month out with a knee injury.

Steelers vs Bengals: Expert picks all in on Pittsburgh

The Steelers are big favorites this week against the Bengals.

Sometimes when it comes to division rivals you have to throw out the records. But in this case that doesn’t hold true. The Pittsburgh Steelers (5-5) are taking on the Cincinnati Bengals (0-10) this week and despite all the injuries Pittsburgh is dealing with, NFL pundits and experts are giving the Bengals no shot.

We once again reached out to our friends at NFL Pick Watch to get the rundown on how the internet is looking at this week’s game. And by an overwhelming margin, the experts are going with the Steelers.

According to their aggregation, 99 percent of experts are picking Pittsburgh. History says this is a smart pick. Over the last 20 matchups, the Steelers are 17-3 and even when it seems the two teams are a close matchup, Pittsburgh finds a way to win.

If the Steelers are going to beat the Bengals it will fall on their defense to carry the offense. Pittsburgh is going to struggle to put up points against any team, even the Bengals.

3 Steelers Who Need To Step Up In Week 12

Three Steelers that can give the Steelers offense a boost.

(Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)

With the Steelers defense shaking out to be one of the best in the NFL, the offense will need to increase it’s production if the Steelers are going to grab an AFC wildcard spot. This week the offense will be down two pro bowlers as JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Conner will sit out against the lowly Cincinnati Bengals. Here are three Steelers that need to step up and help Mason Rudolph put points on the board this week in Cincinnati:

WR James Washington

It’s well known that Washington and Rudolph were teammates at Oklahoma State University so the lack of a connection between the two has been somewhat surprising in 2019. Washington seems to be on the verge of a breakout performance every week, but a landmark performance hasn’t been in the cards for the second-year wideout. Washington led the team in targets, receptions and yards two weeks ago against the Los Angeles Rams. He also scored the Steelers lone offensive touchdown. But a lost fumble late in that game seemed to stymie Washington’s growth and confidence.

Last week against the Browns he only had three receptions for a team-high 49 receiving yards on five targets. Washington has good game speed and while he isn’t the biggest receiver, he has a knack for making big plays downfield. Look for him to bounce back against a Bengals defense that is 24thin passing yards surrendered.

Battered Steelers limp into Cincinnati in another must-win game

Despite the season-ending injury to starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in week two, followed by their top running back in James Conner missing a few games this season, the Steelers were rolling along, finding ways to win games despite the adversity, collecting four straight wins to post a 5-4 record after starting off the year 0-3.

Then the bottom fell out up in Cleveland.

Conner left the game as quickly as he entered it, re-aggravating his shoulder injury. Soon Juju Smith-Schuster and Diontae Johnson would leave the game suffering concussions. Mason Rudolph had his worst day as a pro, throwing four interceptions, and wasn’t able to hit the ocean with a pass if he were standing on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean.

To add insult to injury, you had the brawl at the end of the game, when Myles Garrett decided to drive Rudolph into the ground and lay on top of him, well after the pass had been thrown, and the game already decided at 21-7 Cleveland.

Rudolph, rightfully pissed, pushed Garrett to get off of him. Next thing you know, in a three-man tussle, Garret rips Rudolph’s helmet off, and then swings it at Rudolph’s head, barely connecting, but causing center Maurkice Pouncey to lose his mind and attack Garrett, throwing punches at him until he was on the ground, then adding a few kicks to the head to boot… pun intended.

It was ugly.

Garrett acted like a man a few days later. Admitting his wrongdoing. Rudolph responded shortly thereafter with an apology.

Then on Thursday, Garret decided to go the coward’s route again, desperately trying anything to get his suspension reduced, and stated that Rudolph used a racial slur against him.

His lies fooled no one, especially James Thrash, who upheld Garrett’s indefinite suspension. Pouncey’s suspension was reduced to two games, so he will miss this game and next week in the rematch vs Cleveland.

In addition to the Garrett incident, the Browns were headhunting, leading to the concussions listed above to Smith-Schuster and Johnson.

Now the team has to regroup quickly, and they may have what the doctor ordered in the win-less Bengals. Both James Conner and Juju Smith-Schuster will be out, but Benny Snell will be back in action after missing a few weeks from having his knee scoped.

Snell and Jaylen Samuels should see the bulk of the work at running back, with Trey Edmunds and Kerrith Whyte perhaps seeing a few touches here and there.

With Smith-Schuster out, Diontae Johnson and James Washington will have to elevate their play, as will their quarterback in Mason Rudolph.

This team has a lot of rebounding to do in the wake of last week’s offensive disaster.

The best thing they can do is burn those tapes and come out with an “us against the world” type attitude, with all that has happened not only last week but for the entire season.

Johnny Holton and Deon Cain will look to inject any type of life and offense they can muster for the depleted receiver corps. It would be nice to see Vance McDonald step it up and contribute more, as well as Nick Vannett.

It’s going to take the entire roster to pick itself up and make some plays, or they can kiss the 2019 season good-bye.

With the way the defense is playing, if the offense can find any way to be just average, this team has a puncher’s chance, but honestly, that’s a BIG if with what we’ve seen from this group through ten games.

“It’s crazy how such little things can affect a play,” tight end Nick Vannett said. “It can stop you from getting a yard or two. This is a game of inches, and we want to get as many as we can.”

That statement couldn’t be truer, especially when you have so many starters missing from the line-up.

One of the Steelers biggest problems this season has been converting short-yardage situations. It has been a disaster.

“We realize short-yardage has been an issue for us,” coach Mike Tomlin said. “There are some ways to approach it. No. 1, we have to execute better. There is a certain meat-on-meat or bone-on-bone element of football that you can’t run away from, and short-yardage is one of them. But at the same time, we could do some things from a coach’s perspective from a planning and schematics perspective to assist the guys, as well. And I think we are working in both areas.”

The Steelers should be able to find success running the ball, as the Bengals are dead last in rushing defense. It’s time to man up this weekend, from across the offensive line to the ball carriers.

“I think we are going to be a lot better,” Vannett said. “We expect to be a lot better from here on out.”

Steelers vs Bengals game status report: JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Conner OUT

The Steelers will be without two starters on offense this week.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cincinnati Bengals this week, they will do so shorthanded on offense. The game status report is out for Pittsburgh and the Steelers will be down two starters in wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and running back James Conner.

Smith-Schuster is dealing with a double whammy of a concussion as well as a knee injury. The good news is Diontae Johnson is off the injury report so Pittsburgh won’t be quite so shorthanded at wide receiver.

Conner aggravated the shoulder injury he’s been dealing with for more than a month and this one could keep him on the shelf for a while. But the absence of Conner should be cushioned somewhat by the return of Benny Snell Jr. who has been recovering from a knee injury.

The report also lists cornerback Artie Burns as doubtful. Burns is largely used on special teams so his loss won’t be felt as much should he miss the game.

Steelers vs. Bengals: 3 offensive sleepers who could have a big impact Sunday

Here are some Steelers we want to see play on Sunday.

It’s no secret just how bad the Pittsburgh Steelers offense has been this season. The Steelers are only averaging 283.5 yards per game and 20 points. They are one of the only teams in the league yet to have a 300-yard passer. Pittsburgh has been forced to shuffle some roster spots to account for injuries and lack of production. But this week against the Cincinnati Bengals, here are three guys on offense we are looking forward to watching.

TE Nick Vannett

No one expects Vannett to ever be confused with Rob Gronkowski. But you have to think when the Steelers traded for him, it was for more than just to add a part-time blocking tight end. Call it a hunch, but we have a feeling this is going to be a strong week for Vannett.

Behind enemy lines: 5 questions with Bengals Wire

Get the inside info on the Bengals this week.

Earlier in the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 27-3 and now it is time for the rematch. We reached out to our friends at Bengals Wire to go behind enemy lines before this week’s game.

Can the Bengals rally with six games to play or is the season a lost cause?

Lost cause. The team has admitted it too in going with rookie passer Ryan Finley over Andy Dalton. He’s a little more mobile, sure, but coaches have flat-out admitted this is about evaluating for the future now. Considering they’re in the running for the No. 1 pick, that’s probably a great idea. Zac Taylor traded up to get Finley so they need to see what he’s got. Otherwise, there are far too many injuries to overcome. We’re looking at one or two wins, tops.

Steelers 6.5-point favorites over the Bengals

Even on the road, the Steelers are heavy favorites over the winless Bengals.

[jwplayer yq349tD5-ThvAeFxT]

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals square off this week and according to Bet MGM, the Steelers are heavy road favorites. The current line has the Steelers as 6.5-point favorites.

Cincinnati’s season has been a comedy of errors. The lingering mysterious ankle injury of wide receiver AJ Green and the benching of quarterback Andy Dalton just highlight how bizarre things have gone for the Bengals and factor heavily into why Cincinnati is 0-10.

The Steelers, on the other hand, have clawed their way to 5-5 after starting the season 1-4. The Steelers are 65-35 lifetime against the Bengals and 17-3 in the last 20 games. Pittsburgh is dealing with a rash of injuries but still should have the weapons, especially on defense to keep this game in hand.

Steelers vs Bengals Wednesday practice update

The Steelers had several players absent from practice on Wednesday.

On Wednesday the Pittsburgh Steelers began formal preparation for their showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals. The team put out a practice report and it is a mix of good news and bad news for the Steelers.

The bad news is wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster did not practice and it seems unlikely he plays on Sunday. He’s in the concussion protocol as well as dealing with a knee injury. Also, absent from practice was running back James Conner who continues to deal with a shoulder injury.

In the category of good news, running back Benny Snell Jr. was a full participant and could give the run game a boost this weekend. The Steelers also saw wide receiver Diontae Johnson as a full participant despite not formally being removed from the concussion protocol.
