Cassius Winston named semifinalist for James E. Sullivan Award

The award honors the top amateur athletes in the United States.

Michigan State men’s basketball senior point guard Cassius Winston has been selected as a semifinalist for the 90th annual Amateur Athletics Union James E. Sullivan Award.

According to the AAU, “The AAU Sullivan Award honors the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. It has been presented annually by the AAU since 1930 as a salute to founder and past president of the Amateur Athletic Union, and a pioneer in amateur sports, James E. Sullivan. Based on the qualities of leadership, character, sportsmanship, and the ideals of amateurism, the AAU Sullivan Award goes far beyond athletic accomplishments and honors those who have shown strong moral character.”

Winston is one of 33 semifinalists.

Past winners include former Navy Quarterback Keenan Reynolds, former Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliot, gold medalist and collegiate swimmer Missy Franklin, and Olympic gold-medal-winning gymnast Shawn Johnson, among many accomplished honorees.

You can vote for Winston at the Sullivan Award website. Voting will close March 13 at 11:59 pm EST. The winner will be announced at a ceremony on April 21, 2020 at the New York Athletic Club.
