Cardinals win bumps Patriots up the 2024 NFL draft board

Tanking might not be by design, but it’s working for the Patriots.

There was some good news that came from the New England Patriots’ Week 13 shutout loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

After falling to 2-10 on the season, they now have the second-worst record in the NFL behind the Carolina Panthers. If the season ended today, they would have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

That would put them in position to draft one of the top-two quarterbacks, Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, and begin their efforts towards rebuilding the offense.

The Patriots got some help on Sunday with the Arizona Cardinals winning their third game of the season by defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers. That win created an opening for the Patriots to move up the draft board as one of the top-two picks.

There are still five more games to play, and the Patriots will go on the road to face the same Steelers team that got upset by the Cardinals in Week 14.

If they manage to lose in Pittsburgh as well, there’s a real chance for the Patriots to contend with the Chicago Bears, who own the Carolina Panthers’ top pick, for the No. 1 overall pick of the draft.

It’s one of the few positives to take away from an otherwise disappointing season.
