Cardinals’ Tay Gowan believes he will be ‘Tom Brady of corners’

Cornerback Tay Gowan believes he will be one of the biggest steals in the draft.

The Arizona Cardinals get a potential steal of a player in one of their sixth-round draft picks. Well, to clarify, he thinks he is a steal.

Gowan was selected by the Cardinals with the 223rd overall pick in the draft but he believes he can be an all-time great.

“I feel I’ll be the Tom Brady of the corners,” he told the media after he was drafted. “I want to say thank you for the wait, actually.”

Gowan did not play in 2020, as he opted out of the season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He believes it is the reason for falling in the draft. However, he isn’t upset about it.

“I think it hurt my draft stock, but I also think it was part of my journey and part of my story,” he explained.

He took a circuitous route to the pros. He began at Miami of Ohio for one year, spent a year at a junior college and then one at Central Florida before opting out of the 2020 season.

He feels he is “in a great spot” with the Cardinals and that he will; be able to inspire others with his story.

“When I get to tell it to other kids and relate my message and relate my journey, it can just make more kids feel comfortable to go the type of routes I went,” he said.

The Cardinals like the athletic upside he has. He ran the 40 in 4.49 seconds, posted at 35.5-inch vertical leap and ran the three-cone in 6.86 seconds, which is very good.

His one year of playing at UCF, he played well.

He will likely contribute on special teams as a rookie but has the potential to become a starter.

Brady only had three pass attempts as a rookie. He took over for an injured Drew Bledsoe in 2001. If Gowan is to be the cornerback equivalent of Brady, he should crack the lineup in 2022 and become open of the best.
