The Arizona Cardinals have reportedly given veteran linebacker Jordan Hicks permission to seek a trade, as he is being replaced in the starting lineup by first-round pick Zaven Collins.
While it is uncertain if an actual trade will happen, as we do not know if there is even a market for Hicks, the Cardinals will not get much in terms of savings against the salary cap.
If he is traded before June 1, there are zero savings. He is due to count $6 million against the salary cap this season, the sum of his $2 million in salary, up to $1 million in roster bonuses and $3 million signing bonus proration.
If he is traded before June 1, his $3 million signing bonus proration accelerates to this season and his contract will carry $6 million in dead money. It is a salary cap wash.
If traded after June 1, the Cardinals will save $3 million in cap space, as his dead money would split between this year and 2022.
