Cardinals promote CB Jalen Davis from practice squad with CB injuries

With Byron Murphy and Kevin Peterson both questionable for the game on Sunday, they needed a little insurance at the position on the roster.

The Arizona Cardinals made a roster move on Saturday with uncertainty surrounding the cornerback situation for Week 14. With both Byron Murphy and Kevin Peterson listed as questionable with injuries for the game, the Cardinals promoted practice squad cornerback Jalen Davis to the 53-man roster.

To make room for him, they released defensive lineman Caraun Reid, who was signed this week.

Murphy has a calf injury and Peterson a shoulder injury that caused them to be limited in Friday’s practice, the day the injury showed up on the injury report.

The move to promote Davis suggests there is some doubt about at least of the players being able to play.

If only one is able to play, Davis will simply be the emergency plan off the bench and he would likely play special teams.

If it is Murphy who can’t play and Peterson can, then both Peterson and Chris Jones will play opposite Patrick Peterson.

If Murphy is able to play and Peterson can’t, Murphy will start and Jones will come in for nickel downs. He will play outside and Murphy will slide into the slot.

One is likely going to play. If both were in doubt, they would have likely added a second cornerback to the roster.

Here is Davis’ player bio, as shared by the team in a press release.

Davis (5-10, 185) has spent the entire season on the Cardinals practice squad after joining the team on September 3. He played in three games with the Dolphins last year after originally entering the league with Miami as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2018 out of Utah State. The 23-year old Davis had six tackles, one sack and one forced fumble as a rookie last season after spending the majority of the year on Miami’s practice squad. While at Utah State, Davis was a four-year starter and played in 49 games, collecting 181 tackles (123 solo), eight sacks, 11 interceptions, 48 passes defensed and four forced fumbles.
