Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been talks of the NFL preseason getting shortened, as players have not yet been able to get on the practice field all offseason. If that ends up being the case, it means less time for coaches to evaluate players on their roster and it means fewer live game reps to prepare for the season.
Some teams will be affected more than others.
According to Touchdown Wire’s Barry Werner, the Arizona Cardinals are one of those teams.
There was progress in Year One of Kyler and Kliff. However, they are young and growing. Murray needs to build chemistry and with DeAndre Hopkins. It should be easy, but it will take some time. Practice and play make perfect.
It is true that Murray needs reps. If he is to make the big jump from Year 1 to Year 2, he needs reps. However, basically the entire offense returns, so they already know the offense. There shouldn’t be much in the way of growing pains.
Defensively, there is less continuity. They will have at least five news starters over who was in the lineup in last year’s season opener, but most of the defensive roster played in the system a year ago.
Yes, the Cardinals will be hurt by a shortened preseason, but it isn’t likely going to be more than any other team.
