Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon hoping to win another green jacket

Gannon hopes to win a golf tournament this weekend in Ohio.

Jonathan Gannon loves playing golf, but the life of a head coach in the NFL can make it difficult to do it very much.

Five months ago while the league was preparing for Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, Gannon was invited to participate in the Pro-Am at TPC Scottsdale, Ariz.

Asked about his game by Cam Cox of 12 News, Gannon, who has a handicap around seven or eight, jokingly said, “Probably broken. I’m up and down. I’m streaky. Streaky.”

However, not streaky enough to do well each year at a member-guest three-day tournament that began today (July 11) in his home state of Ohio. So, well, that he has two green jackets in his closet.

Green jacket? Let Gannon explain.

When the offseason program was wrapping up last month, he was asked about his plans for the down time considering he traveled to Europe last year.

“No Europe trip,” he said. “I’m gonna go to Ohio. I play in a member-guest with my best friend and we currently have two green jackets (that you get) when you win. And no team has ever won a third. Especially with this new (proposed offseason) schedule, I might not be able to play pretty soon here if that goes through. We already talked about that, but I’m on the hunt for a third green jacket. Compete. Compete. I don’t just say it. I do preach it.”

Noting that he had to “get going” with practice, Gannon said the tournament format is two-man best ball on Thursday, Chapman format on Friday and four-ball on Saturday.

“Gotta hit the cup, aggregate,” Gannon said of the final day, then concluded, “It’s a grind. It’s a grind. Eighty teams; one of the best member-guests in Ohio.”
