Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith reportedly still have work to do before their fight in December is finalized.
ESPN, citing sources close to the negotiations, reported on Wednesday that Alvarez and the super middleweight titleholder from England had agreed to a fight on Dec. 18, 19 or 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
However, Eddie Hearn, Smith’s promoter told BoxingScene.com that no deal is in place. He added that the targeted dates are Dec. 18 or 19.
“Talks are ongoing with Team Canelo and it would be an honor to reach an agreement on this tremendous fight with Callum Smith,” Hearn told the website.
BoxingScene.com also cited an anonymous source connected to Alvarez as saying, “nothing is done, there’s a lot on the table. No deal is done.”
The TV or streaming platform on which the fight would be available also hasn’t been settled, evidently.
It was presumed when Alvarez broke free from Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN that he would go back to fighting on pay-per-view. However, Hearn is affiliated with DAZN, meaning the Smith fight could land on the international streaming service in spite of the split.
DAZN had previously rejected Smith as an opponent for Alvarez because the Liverpudlian wouldn’t’ be expected to drive subscriptions.
Also, sources told BoxingScene.com that Alvarez has had discussions with Premier Boxing Champions about a three-fight deal. PBC has two top super middleweight titleholders, titleholder Caleb Plant and David Benavidez.
