Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders title-unification bout set for May

Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders have agreed to fight for three of the four major 168-pound titles in May.

Canelo Alvarez has his title-unification fight. So does Billy Joe Saunders.

Alvarez and Saunders will meet for three of the four major super middleweight belts on either May 1 or 8 on DAZN, The Athletic is reporting. The site evidently hasn’t been finalized.

The fight is contingent on Alvarez beating Avni Yildirim on Feb. 27 in Miami.

Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KOs) and Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) had reached a deal to fight in May of last year but the coronavirus shut down the sport.

The Mexican star, who holds two belts, has stated his intention to unify all the 168-pound titles. That means it’s possible he will fight titleholder Caleb Plant in September if he beats Yildirim and Saunders, and Plant beats Caleb Truax this Saturday.

Alvarez won his titles by easily outpointing Callum Smith on Dec. 19, his most-recent fight.

Saunders last fought on Dec. 4 in London, when the Englishman defeated countryman Martin Murray by a unanimous decision in his second title defense.
