Is there an issue with recruiting at Texas?
It would be quite comical to say that there is a recruiting issue at the University of Texas, right? Well, there is a recruiting issue at the University of Texas.
How could that be?
There isn’t an issue with talent acquisition per se. However, they have shown the inability to hold onto that talent. Jalen Milroe and Billy Bowman were two of the top recruits in the 2021 class, now they are heading to Alabama and Oklahoma respectively. Their departures sent shockwaves, Bowman went as far as to call out the staff, stating he wanted to be around coaches who “knew what they were doing.”
The homegrown talent leaving Texas doesn’t stop there. Tommy and James Brockermeyer were legacy players. Their grandfather, father, and brother played at Texas. They are going to Alabama. Quinn Ewers grew up rooting for Texas. He is set to go to Ohio State. Lone Star talent is wanting to play anywhere but Texas. Can Urban fix that?
As far as recruiting, Meyer has proven that he’s able to recruit. He was able to land some of Texas’ top in-state players as the head coach of Ohio State including Baron Browning, JK Dobbins, Jeff Okudah. They were three of the top six players in the state of Texas in the 2017 recruiting cycle, Meyer signed them all.

The 2021 class might be too far gone, but acting swiftly as the season winds down could save the 2022 class. Whether Meyer can flip Ewers or not, timing will be everything in terms of stopping the bleeding.
He knows the winning culture and recruiting, but can Urban Meyer restore actually winning on the field at Texas?
