We’re still trying to pick up our jaws off the floor from the Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis trade.
The biggest questions are for the Dallas Mavericks: why would they trade a 25-year-old mega-super-duperstar when he’s one of the league’s best players?
TRADE GRADES: Who won this Lakers and Mavericks deal?
Here’s some insight: per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the Mavs had concerns about “his constant conditioning issues,” and they also were worried about him signing a supermax contract this offseason.
So the question is: will the Lakers be able to offer him a supermax now that he’s been traded to Los Angeles?
Per ESPN’s Bobby Marks, he is not.
The smart play would be for Doncic to sign a three-year extension this summer with a player option in 2028-29.
That would allow him to reach 10 years of service and recoup most if not all from the missed opportunity to sign the super max this offseason.
