Cam Newton finally held the Funky Friday show he’d promised us all after the Patriots cut him and it revealed so many things to us.
Newton finally revealed why he believed he was cut by the Patriots after seemingly being in line for the starting job in New England.
He spoke to his father, Cecil Newton, about the reason. And he thinks it was because Mac Jones would’ve been uncomfortable with him as a backup. Essentially, he was saying that if he was backing up Jones and Jones were to slip at any point, there’d be questions about whether Newton should come in and do the job again.
It’s an interesting take, for sure.

“Let me be honest with you. If they would have asked me, ‘Cam, we’re going to give the team to Mac, you’re going to be second-string. We expect you to be everything and some to guide him throughout this tenure,’ I would have said, ‘Absolutely…But listen, the truth of the matter is this: He would have been uncomfortable.”
This might not even be a conversation if Cam was still playing. It’s not as if he performed terribly this preseason — he just couldn’t play because of COVID rules.
But, listen. All of that is fine and good. It’s a conversation to have. But his hat. I cannot get over his hat.
Newton actually has top hats with holes in them for his hair. Which, well, I can’t decide quite how I feel about that. It looks kind of wild but where else is he going to put his hair? This makes sense…right?
Sure, it’s kind of weird. But the innovation! The ingenuity! You have to respect it. You just have to.
Came Newton, a certified fly guy in my eyes. Even if it is sort of ridiculous and a bit weird.
