Cam Newton addresses ‘elephant in the room’ of replacing Tom Brady

“Coach [Josh] McDaniels, you’re able to call some stuff that you ain’t ever been able to call now.”

Tom Brady’s legacy with the New England Patriots will live in the history books for the rest of time.

He spent 20 seasons as the team’s signal caller and blazed a path that will be incredibly difficult for another quarterback to reciprocate. Six Super Bowl wins with nine appearances, four Super Bowl MVP awards, 14 Pro Bowls and the list goes on. So, it’s evident the Patriots’ locker room and offense will look much different this season.

Cam Newton will likely replace the legendary quarterback and he understands the shoes he’s stepping into. Newton signed with the Patriots after sitting nearly three months on the free agent list. Newton spoke about replacing Brady and the move to the Patriots in a roundtable discussion with Odell Beckham Jr., Todd Gurley and Victor Cruz.

“You know who [you’re] coming after? I’m like, yeah, great. What he was, what he is, is great, needs no even talking about it,” Newton said. “But one thing about it, though: Coach [Josh] McDaniels, you’re able to call some stuff that you ain’t ever been able to call now.

“You’re getting a dog. You’re getting one of these ticked-off dogs too. And I’m looking at the schedule and I’m like, ‘Who we’re playing? That team passed on me! OK, that team passed on me. They could’ve came and got me.'”

Newton brings up an extremely good point, while giving Brady the credit he deserves for his accomplishments. The Patriots aren’t getting the same quarterback they’ve had for 20 years, but they are getting a former NFL MVP. New England’s getting one of the toughest, most capable rushing quarterbacks in the league’s history.

Things won’t look the same with the Patriots’ offense this year, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
