Cam Akers was focused on getting his weight ‘way up’ this offseason

Cam Akers added some bulk to his frame this offseason, making sure his weight was “where it needed to be.”

Cam Akers was listed at 217 pounds when he was drafted by the Rams in the second round three years ago. He’s still listed at that exact weight on the team’s official roster, but an adjustment might need to be made at some point.

One of Akers’ goals this offseason was to get his weight up before camp, while also making sure he was in the right place mentally. He didn’t say how much weight he put on, but he was intentional in adding bulk to his frame.

“My weight. Just making sure my weight was where it needed to be,” Akers said of what he focused on this offseason. “And obviously, mentally, making sure I was where I needed to be. But those were two of the biggest things. Making sure I stay on top of my weight and being where I need to be mentally.

When asked whether he was trying to get his weight up or down, he had this to say.

“Up. Up. Like, way up. Way up. Way up,” he said, laughing.

The Rams haven’t put the pads on or hit each other in practice yet, so Akers can’t say how different he feels on the field. He said to ask him after the Rams’ first padded practice, which is when he’ll have a better idea of his new frame.

“Ask me after the first day in pads,” he said.

Akers isn’t known for being a big back, standing 5-foot-10 and 217 pounds. But by no means is he small. He wins with his elusiveness and agility more than with power, but perhaps he’s trying to add a new element to his game by bulking up.

Either way, Akers has a lot riding on this season with free agency coming up in 2024, so he’s doing everything in his power to put together his best year yet.
