Cam Akers seems to be considering a switch to No. 3 jersey

Cam Akers has worn No. 3 since high school and he seems to be considering a switch thanks to a new rule.

Cam Akers has worn No. 3 since he was a quarterback in high school, continuing to wear the number in college at Florida State. His Instagram username is camakers3 and his Twitter handle is @thereal_cam3.

He clearly likes the number three, which is why he picked 23 when he got to the NFL. But now that the league passed a rule allowing running backs to wear single-digit numbers, Akers has an opportunity to go back to his high school and college number.

Based on his latest tweet from Wednesday night, he sure seems to be considering a switch to No. 3.

There are just two problems with changing his number from 23 to 3. First, John Wolford currently wears No. 3 after switching from No. 9 when Matthew Stafford arrived. He probably wouldn’t be all that willing to change again.

Second, players who want to change their numbers for the 2021 season will have to buy out the remaining inventory of their current jerseys, which would probably be a high cost – especially for a second-year player on his rookie contract.

Akers might be stuck with No. 23 for another year because A) Wolford will be an exclusive rights free agent in 2022, though he should be re-signed, and B) players don’t have to buy out their jerseys if they switch their numbers in 2022.
