The comparisons between Caleb Williams and Patrick Mahomes won’t go away heading into the 2024 NFL draft. If anything, they will intensify.
When comparing these two quarterbacks, it is undeniable that they are both electric, multi-dimensional players with exceptional creativity and improvisational skills. They both possess substantial dual-threat capabilities, superb pocket presence and field awareness, and uniquely sharp instincts. It’s not hard to see why the comparisons exist.
However, one thing Patrick Mahomes has (and has benefited from) is something we can’t yet assign to Caleb Williams: the right NFL team and head coach.
That matters so much.
Imagine a world in which USC’s Sam Darnold went to the San Francisco 49ers the way Brock Purdy did. If San Francisco, not the New York Jets, gave Darnold his initial entry point into the NFL, chances are he would be a substantially better pro quarterback today — maybe not a superstar, but above-average and not a backup.
A lot of NFL organizations and coaches could give Caleb Williams the chance to flourish, but there are a few teams which could be traps for Caleb.
The Chiefs and Andy Reid gave Patrick Mahomes the best possible chance to succeed. We still need to see if Caleb Williams gets an appreciably favorable NFL situation … and we certainly hope he does.
