Caitlin Clark sets new WNBA single season rookie assists record

Caitlin Clark is the WNBA’s new single-season rookie assists record holder.

Caitlin Clark captured another piece of history on Sunday during the Indiana Fever‘s contest versus the Seattle Storm from inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

With her second assist of the day, a fastbreak helper to guard Lexie Hull, Clark passed Ticha Penicheiro for the WNBA’s single season rookie assists record.

It represented Clark’s 225th assist on the season, overtaking Penicheiro’s 224 assists during the 1998 WNBA season with the Sacramento Monarchs. The record-setting assist came with 4:41 remaining in the first half.

It’s the latest piece of a historic season for Clark.

Entering Sunday, Clark was averaging 17.6 points, 8.3 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 40.9% from the field, 32.9% from 3-point distance and 89.2% from the free throw line.

In the Fever’s first game back from the WNBA All-Star and Olympics break, Clark registered her 10th double-double of the season. Clark finished one point off her career-high in the 98-89 win over the Phoenix Mercury, tallying 29 points and 10 assists on Friday.

“I feel like we’ve been itching to get back out on the court. Especially over the course of the last week. It’s like we’ve been ready for it, and now you’ve just got to come out and show the work that you’ve put in,” Clark said after the Fever’s win over the Mercury.
