Caitlin Clark chasing history among CBS Sports’ top WNBA storylines as season resumes

More Caitlin Clark history is on the horizon.

The WNBA season resumes for Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Friday night as they play host to the Phoenix Mercury at 6:30 p.m. CT on ION.

It’s a welcome return for Iowa, Fever and Clark fans after nearly a month-long hiatus with the WNBA All-Star and Olympics break.

As the season resumes tonight for the Fever, CBS Sports took a look at the five top storylines in the WNBA season’s home stretch.

Naturally, Clark is right in the forefront of the top storylines as the season gets back underway tonight. CBS Sports writes that Clark’s pursuit of WNBA history in the Fever’s remaining games is one of the top five storylines.

Clark, the No. 1 overall pick, is the Rookie of the Year favorite. She’s averaging 17.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and a league-best 8.2 assists per game, became the first rookie in league history to record a triple-double and set the single-game assist record with 19.

With 14 games remaining, Clark needs just 13 assists to break Ticha Penicheiro’s rookie assist record of 225, and 104 assists to surpass Alyssa Thomas‘ all-time single-season mark of 316. At her current pace, she should get both records as long as she doesn’t miss any games. – Jack Maloney, CBS Sports.

With the way that Clark was going when the season hit its pause, it’s fully within the realm of possibility that Clark breaks Ticha Penicheiro’s rookie assists record in the Fever’s first game back.

In Indiana’s final seven games before the pause, Clark had double-figure assists in six of them, including her aforementioned record-breaking single-game assists performance with 19 and a trio of other performances with 13 helpers.

Clark is averaging 17.1 points, 8.2 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 40.5% from the field, 32.7% from 3-point range and 89.1% from the free throw line.

In order to pass Thomas’ single-season assists mark of 316, Clark needs to average 7.4 assists per game.
