After losing to SDSU before a sold out crowd in Provo last fall, BYU is hungry for more Aztecs basketball.

SAN DIEGO – The men’s basketball programs at San Diego State and Brigham Young are turning heads thanks to this past season’s stellar play.

The two will now embark on a brand new home-and-home series this next season with the Cougars visiting San Diego first.

On Dec. 1st, 2020, BYU will appear on Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena for the third time in ten years. Tipoff times and broadcast plans will be determined and announced later.

The Aztecs will in turn appear at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah in 2021-22, at a yet-to-be-announced date, to try and repeat their 76-71 victory last season.

San Diego State’s best wins have come against BYU.  In the championship game of the 2011 Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas, the No. 7-ranked Aztecs cruised passed the No. 8 Cougars, 72-54. Against the nation’s leading scorer, BYU’s Jimmer Fredette, Aztec Billy White managed a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, and Kawhi Leonard scored 20 points and grabbed 8 boards.

The years of “Kawhi vs. Jimmer” might have been the most epic in the history of both programs.

Last year’s five-point win at Provo was notable as it was the Aztecs’ fourth ever victory at BYU.  Jordan Schakel scored a career-high 19 points, and after halftime he was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor, including 5-for-5 from three-point land, and poured in 17 points.

SDSU also beat the Cougars 90-81 in San Diego in December 2018.

Last season, SDSU finished No. 6 in the final Associated Press poll with a record of 30-2. The Aztecs claimed the Mountain West Conference regular-season title and were projected to get a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament before it was canceled due to the spread of COVID-19. Coach Brian Dutcher was USA Today’s NCAA Coach of the Year.

BYU, under first-year coach Mark Pope, ended up No. 18 in the AP poll and posted a 24-8 record. The Cougars were projected as a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The all-time series between the two schools dates back to 1940. BYU has a 48-26 lead in the series.
