BYU at Boise State: Three things to know

  1. The Cougars head to the Smurf Turf looking to keep that goose egg in the loss column. So far, they have had a bunch of tune-ups, playing against a handful of AAC, Conference USA and Sun Belt teams. A date against the Broncos, especially on the road, will be their biggest test to date.
  2. BYU ranks sixth in total yards (530.9), 12th in passing yards (337.7) and seventh in points scored (44.4). Defensively, it has been equally as strong, ranking 11th in total yards (281.4), 20th in passing yards (183.4), 12th in rushing yards (98.0) and 11th in points (13.4) allowed per game.
  3. Boise State, which kicked off its season Oct. 24, is 2-0 SU/ATS with two Over results, averaging 45.5 PPG while allowing just 21.5 PPG. They Broncos are No. 1 against the pass defensively, but that’s a bit skewed since one of those games was against the triple-option and Air Force. We’ll find out a lot more about Boise’s defense against the talented and balanced offense of the Cougars.

BYU at Boise State: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Boise State 34, BYU 31

Money line (ML)

BOISE STATE (+130) is a good value as an underdog on its home turf. Yes, BYU (-154) heads into this one unbeaten, but who has it really played? Navy, Troy, Louisiana Tech, Texas-San Antonio, Houston, Texas State and Western Kentucky, that’s who. Not exactly a murderer’s row. Take the BRONCOS (+130) as home dogs, as they’ll be fired up.

Against the spread (ATS)

BOISE STATE (+3, +115) isn’t an underdog at home very often. The last time it was a dog at home was Nov. 9, 2018, when it beat Fresno State 24-17. Before that, the last time the Broncos were home underdogs was Oct. 23, 1999, against Nevada when its conference was called the Big West. Yeah, it doesn’t happen often. BACK THE BRONCOS, although they’re a better value on the money line.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 61.5 (-110) is a good wager, hitting in seven of the past nine for the Cougars against Mountain West teams. The Over is also 3-1-1 in their past five as road favorites, and 4-1-1 in the past six on the road overall. Yes, the Under is 7-0 for Boise in the past seven at home against a team with a winning road record, but QB Hank Bachmeier, RB George Holani and WR Khalil Shakir represent the biggest challenge to BYU’s defense, and the Broncos will roll up plenty of points.
