Bye Week Bowl Projections: Can LSU still reach the New Year’s Six?

LSU’s hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff are all but over, but a New Year’s Six bowl certainly remains on the table.

Barring unprecedented levels of chaos, LSU’s hopes of making the College Football Playoff this season are all but finished. No two-loss team has made it before, and while the Tigers would have a strong case if they won out, there are an especially high number of contending teams this year.

Still, there’s a lot that potentially remains on the table for this team. It could upset Alabama again, win the SEC West once more (though it needs Ole Miss to slip up one more time) and possibly capture the conference crown this time.

The Tigers still have very real New Year’s Six hopes, as well, but USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith doesn’t see it in his latest projections. Instead, he has a rematch of the 2019 national title game between LSU and Clemson, this time at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville.

LSU can’t afford to slip up again if it wants to reach Atlanta for the second year in a row, and this team likely also needs to win out if it has any hopes of breaking into the New Year’s Six in the final year of the current format.
