After countless teases and glimpses, Bungie, which is enjoying a momentous week, is finally talking about what weapon crafting will look like when it arrives in the Destiny 2’s The Witch Queen expansion later this month.
In their latest ‘This Week at Bungie’ post, Bungie talks about their much-touted (and demanded) system ahead of its highly-anticipated release. Like all things Destiny 2 related, it’s a bit more involved than you might initially believe.
When The Witch Queen launches, Destiny 2 players will be able to play the first two missions without owning the expansion. In these first two missions, players will be guided to a place called the Enclave, which acts like a forge and is where they will be able to craft legendary weapons and be prompted to make their first glaive, a new melee weapon type coming in the forthcoming expansion.

Crafting looks to be a multi-step process, beginning with finding ‘patterns’ or blueprints that will drop “through quest completions, while others can be earned by completing various gameplay objectives,” after which players hunt down the materials for them and craft the weapons. Once players make this first glaive, legendary weapons will drop with a new ability called Deepsight Resonance. This ability will ask players to complete objectives with the weapons in hand and, upon completion, allow them to extract perks from these to mix and match with most of their crafted armory.
Players will be able to level up their crafted weapons by using them in activities and Bungie is also allowing them to ‘reshape’ whatever they make even after they’ve crafted it, allowing for customization at all times.

Bungie also teases the introduction of ‘mementos,’ another way to customize a weapon’s appearance rather than its traits and parts, and says that “more of these will come online” through specific activities like Trials of Osiris and be rolled out “down the line.” While they don’t mention much about crafting Exotic weapons, the highest tier of gear in Destiny 2, Bungie does say that this will focus more on “fine-tuning something with a defined identity,” rather than building a weapon from scratch.
Bungie was recently acquired by Sony and while Destiny 2 and their future games will remain multiplatform, the studio is expected to bring their expertise to help grow PlayStation’s live service offerings. Destiny 2: The Witch Queen launches on Feb. 22, 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
