Two years ago, the Chicago Bulls brought in Lonzo Ball to be their starting point guard, but unfortunately, injuries derailed that plan. Ball went down with an injury just 35 games into his Bulls tenure and has yet to return to the court. And now, Ball is reportedly set to miss the entirety of next season, too.
But the Bulls made strides toward fixing their point guard position this summer, re-signing Coby White and bringing in Jevon Carter. With the moves, many wondered who will be the starting point guard heading into next season, but a Bulls staffer dropped a subtle hint at that answer when speaking to Keith Smith of Spotrac.
While at Summer League in Las Vegas, Smith spoke with (anonymous) members of all teams, and one mentioned that the Bulls hope White can win Sixth Man of the Year.
“Adding Jevon Carter and re-signing Coby White were big moves for us,” they told Smith. “Jevon will bring some of the defense we lost at the lead guard spot with Lonzo out. And he can shoot too. Coby has come a long way. We think he could win Sixth Man of the Year. He’s been that good as a bench scorer.”
Noting their hope for White to win Sixth Man of the Year is a fairly clear indicator that the Bulls plan on making Carter the starting point guard next season, which makes sense.
While White had a solid end to this past season, Carter’s prowess on the defensive end and behind the three-point line make him a solid choice to lead the starting five.
