Chicago Bulls guard Coby White on Tuesday was named to the 2019-20 NBA All-Rookie Second Team to become the 23rd player in franchise history to receive the honor and the first since Lauri Markkanen in 2018.
White averaged 13.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 65 games played this season. He was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for February after averaging 20.1 points, 4.1 assists and four rebounds during the month.
The seventh overall pick had an incredible run over his last nine games of the season before the stoppage of play on March 11. During that span, he became the first rookie in NBA history to record at least 30 points in three straight games as a reserve.
White ultimately failed to earn a place in the Rising Stars Game and said on Wednesday that his exclusion from the annual showcase event helped fuel his run. White called it a blessing to be named to the All-Rookie Second Team but felt as though he was still overlooked at times.
I feel like at times I was overlooked. But I feel like at times I didn’t play up to my expectations. Not making the Rising Stars Game was also fueling my fire but I feel like the ones who did make it deserved it and they deserved to be part of the game. It was fuel to my fire and I just wanted to get better; it was a wake-up call for me. After that, I kinda took it how it was and continued to get better.
The Bulls, and the seven other teams that did not participate in the season restart, have been participating in a voluntary training camp this week. Players are under heavy restrictions due to COVID-19 but most have taken the opportunity to work out and practice in a limited capacity.
White said that he has been working on all areas of his game but hasn’t been able to practice too much due to the coronavirus. He is looking to enter training camp next season as the starting point guard and is working to get better each day.
