Bucs free agent Blaine Gabbert signs with Chiefs

The Bucs’ backup QB brought in by coach Bruce Arians is the latest Tampa Bay player to head to Kansas City.

Tampa Bay’s backup QB during the Tom Brady era is heading to a new home.

QB [autotag]Blaine Gabbert[/autotag] is set to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs to backup Patrick Mahomes, as reported by Pat McAfee on the Pat McAfee show. Gabbert became a free agent after the 2022 season.

Gabbert came to the Bucs in 2019 with head coach Bruce Arians, who played under him and Byron Leftwich in Arizona prior to his time in Tampa Bay. He remained the backup quarterback throughout the time Arians and the remnants of his staff were with the Bucs, as his knowledge of the system from years back proved valuable to the coaches and the QB room.

Gabbert has gotten a little playing time in the last three years. Collectively, he’s thrown for 239 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions with a 62.9% completion percentage as a Buccaneer, but he never played a full game as a member of the Bucs — only in relief of quarterback Tom Brady when the team was either blowing out an opponent or playing a game that would not affect playoff standing.

With Gabbert gone, the quarterback competition in Tampa Bay will remain firmly between two QBs in Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask.
