June 19 is the holiday commemorating the date in 1865 when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger traveled to Galveston, Texas, to inform residents that President Abraham Lincoln had freed enslaved people in rebel states more than two years earlier and that enslavers had to comply with the Emancipation Proclamation. The day takes on extra meaning this year in light of racial tension in America that has arisen once again in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer last month. The incident has sparked protests worldwide calling for an end to systemic racism.
Today, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, along with several players, took to social media to acknowledge the importance of Juneteenth.
