The conversation about Bryce Young’s size will never go away—whether that conversation is a good or a bad one. And unfortunately, the rookie quarterback and the Carolina Panthers are getting an early dose of the latter.
Following Monday night’s 20-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints, where the offense struggled for a second straight outing, Young was asked how he thinks his stature has translated into the pro level.
“I don’t know what it’s like to be tall, to be honest with you,” he replied. “It’s been the same. I think there’s a lot of things I can improve on. There’s a lot of things I can get better at. Obviously, we have to do a better job.
“There’s a lot of things I’m gonna look back on and try to be better at. We all wanna look in the mirror and grow. But, again, I don’t really know what it’s like to be tall. So I can’t compare it to something else.”
The 5-foot-10, 204-pounder doesn’t know what it feels like to win in the NFL yet either. Young, in Carolina’s 0-2 start, has completed 42 of his 71 throws (59.2 percent) for 299 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Out of that work has come a lowly average of 4.2 yards per attempt. And whether that’s a product of imperfect play-calling, a lack of protection, struggling wideouts and/or his size—it’s just not good enough.
