Bruce Bowen once spoke to Sixers, Joel Embiid about social media issues

Former NBA champion Bruce Bowen talked to Joel Embiid the Philadelphia 76ers about expectations and social media problems.

Former Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown loved talking about his San Antonio Spurs days. After all, he was an assistant coach there for nine seasons before taking the job with Philadelphia in 2013.

During his time in San Antonio, he experienced a lot of success and worked with the likes of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Bruce Bowen among many others. Naturally, Brown would call upon those players to help his younger Sixers players.

While on ESPN’s Get Up, Bowen told a story of when he spoke to the Sixers when they were once in San Antonio. Bowen talked to them about seizing the moment and about their social media tendencies and one player who seemed to have an issue was Joel Embiid.

Bowen:

I was in San Antonio at the time, and Brett Brown and the 76ers were in town. He asked me to speak to the team. At this time they had JJ Redick. I talked about how the Clippers came up short. When Redick was there, along with Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, Blake Griffin, and I said ‘You guys have to understand that it’s so much about the right now you have to play as if there’s no tomorrow because you’re not guaranteed to get anywhere’ and so after that conversation I talked about also stay of the media, stop tweeting so much and you know the one individual who had a problem with the whole meeting? It was Joel Embiid, because he felt like he was being chastised for the things that he had been saying all I’m saying this is if you’re going to say something for the world to see, don’t be surprised when people have ill will or ill thoughts about what you’re tweeting as far as I guess I’m a 5 man now.

Embiid has always been active and vocal on his social media whether it be Twitter or Instagram, but he backed it up on the floor more often than not. He is also only 26-years old right now and he does have some growing up to do, but he has already come so far. He is one of the top players in this league and Philadelphia is in good hands with him.
