It is crazy to think about how long ago running back Nick Chubb was lost to the season for the Cleveland Browns. Second-year running back Jerome Ford has been thrust into the starting role and at times has shown some major promise. He also seems to have gotten better as the year went down and you can not question rather Ford runs hard. And the analytics community has backed that up.
According to running back efficiency data from SumerSports Ford has one of the best explosive play rates but also one of the highest negative run rates as well. That has been the story of the Browns’ running game since Nick Chubb went down.
It seems like with Ford it’s routinely a 10-yard or more run or a run of two yards or less, it’s something you just don’t see very often. Ford lacks the vision to see cutback lanes consistently but if he can get that fixed he can be a solid running back starter.
