The Brooklyn Nets seem to have their entire roster set with training camp just a few weeks from now. While Brooklyn seems to be done with hunting for stars/superstars for now, depending on how the 2023-24 season goes, that mindset could change.
In a recent article by Bleacher Report, Zach Buckley suggested that the one risk that the Nets should take for next season is going all-in for Portland Trail Blazers superstar Damian Lillard. At this point, it seems that going after Lillard may be a foolish journey given that Lillard seems intent on playing for the Miami Heat next season, no matter what it takes.
What may keep the door open for Brooklyn to get Lillard is the fact that Lillard is still in Portland with no indication of a trade between the Trail Blazers and Heat happening soon. If trade negotiations continue to stall as the season goes on, the Nets may be able to finally get Lillard.
Here’s what Buckley had to say about his suggestion to Brooklyn:
“The Nets seemingly have a rising star in swingman Mikal Bridges, but where does that get them on the hoops hierarchy? Surely not in a position to contend for the crown, since nearly every team has at least two stars on the roster.
Since even the most bullish Brooklyn backer might have trouble identifying a second-star candidate on the roster, the Nets might need to look outside the organization to scratch that itch. Why not bully their way to the front of the line in the Damian Lillard sweepstakes?
Sure, Brooklyn isn’t his preferred destination, but the idea he can simply handpick his next destination when he still has four years (and an absurd amount of money) left on his contract feels incredibly ambitious on his part, even in this era of player empowerment.”
