With seven players in the transfer portal, senior Brooke Nelson found her name on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s First Team All-America, which was a much-needed bright spot for coach Heather Tarr and the Washington Huskies.
Nelson had a spectacular year during her final season of eligibility, leading the team with a 1.093 OPS at the plate, along with 12 home runs and 34 runs batted in. She became a staple in the middle of the order, playing in all 47 games, starting 46.
She also dominated in the circle, posting a 5-1 record with a 2.02 ERA over 16 appearances. Nelson tallied 35 strikeouts over 34 2/3 innings with a .98 WHIP and had arguably her best moment of the season in the circle, tossing a no-hitter against Loyola Chicago in February.
Nelson’s final year was full of big moments, including three multi-home run games and a slew of accolades. She was named to the All-Pac-12 first team and NFCA All-Pacific Region first team, and was also recognized by Softball America as the nation’s No. 5 two-way player.
As Heather Tarr looks to the portal to bolster her roster, Nelson’s development over her five seasons at Washington could be a big selling point on the recruiting trail.
