USC freshman Bronny James, the eldest son of Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, has been cleared by doctors for a full return to basketball after suffering a cardiac arrest in July.
Bronny was hospitalized after the incident during workouts and was discharged the following day. He was diagnosed with an “anatomically and functionally significant congenital heart defect” and was expected to make a full recovery.
“Bronny will have a final evaluation with USC staff this week, resume practice next week, and return to games soon after,” a family spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. “The James family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible medical team, the entire USC community, and especially the countless friends, family, and fans for their love and support. Fight On!”
LeBron said on Nov. 6 that Bronny would have “a big moment” at the end of the month to be cleared to practice. He said at the time that, if cleared, Bronny would be able to be soon available to play in game situations with the Trojans.
The 19-year-old James has been seen at games while awaiting clearance to practice. The Trojans are 5-2 to start the season and will face No. 11 Gonzaga in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday. They begin conference play on Dec. 28 with Oregon.
The four-star prospect committed to play at USC in May over Ohio State and Oregon. He was the 20th-ranked recruit in the class of 2023 and part of a talented incoming freshman group for the Trojans.
