The Denver Broncos have three new coordinators this season with the new team brass set for years in the hiring of GM Geoge Paton last year, HC Nathaniel Hackett this offseason and the acquisition of franchise quarterback Russell Wilson.
Newly-hired offensive coordinator Justin Outten coached under then-OC Hackett in Green Bay, while defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero ironically (but conveniently) has ties to former HC Vic Fangio. Then there’s special teams coordinator Dwayne Stukes.
Stukes is tasked with turning around a dismal special teams unit under the previous coaching staff. The Broncos are not hiding the fact they’re looking to strengthen the third phase of the game in the NFL draft.
Last week, Paton said, “As you all know, we weren’t very good last year. That falls on us on the personnel side. We need better special teamers. We need guys that can not only play defense or offense — if they’re not starting, they need to play special teams. We look for those traits primarily in the third day.”
Assistant GM Darren Mougey added that the team “[would] love to add a dynamic returner.” The Broncos have nine picks heading into Thursday’s draft. They have five picks in the first four rounds despite not having a first-round pick.
