When the Denver Broncos acquired Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks, they also inherited the quarterback’s remaining contract.
Right now, Wilson has a very team-friendly contract with relatively low salary cap hits of $24 million in 2022 and $27 million in 2023. He’s currently scheduled to become a free agent in 2024, but Denver has no plans of letting Wilson hit the market.
The Broncos aren’t necessarily focused on an extension at the moment, but it’s going to happen at some point.
“We obviously want him here for a long time, but nothing is imminent,” general manager George Paton said Friday. “I’m sure we will talk soon. We didn’t make this trade not to have him here for a very long time.”
Denver will likely prioritize the remaining waves of free agency and perhaps even the draft before turning attention to Wilson. The Broncos could even wait for an in-season extension or potentially wait until next offseason, but negotiations will begin at some point in the coming months, well before the quarterback is scheduled to hit free agency in March 2024.
