Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at third-year* wide receiver David Sills, No. 87.
Before the Broncos: Sills (6-3, 211 pounds) started his college career as a backup quarterback at West Virginia. After one season with the Mountaineers, Sills transferred to El Camino College to start as a QB.
After one season at the community college, Sills returned to West Virginia, this time as a wide receiver. Following two more years with the Mountaineers, Sills went undrafted in 2019 and signed with the Buffalo Bills. He failed to make Buffalo’s 53-man roster but was quickly picked up by the New York Giants.
Sills spent one of his first season on New York’s practice squad. He then spent the 2020 season on reserve before dressing for four games in 2021. The following year, Sills dressed for nine games and hauled in 11 receptions for 106 yards. He failed to make their 53-man roster last summer and was not signed to the practice squad.
*Though he entered the league in 2019, the NFL considers Sills a “third-year” player because he only has two accrued seasons (on an active roster or reserve list for at least six games in a season).
Broncos tenure: Denver signed Sills to the practice squad last August. He was elevated to the game-day roster three times last season. He played 16 snaps on offense last fall but he did not have any targets or receptions.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Longshot. The Broncos have a crowded wide receiver depth chart, so Sills is unlikely to make the active roster. He could be a candidate for the practice squad once again. Now 28 years old, Sills could be facing a make-or-break summer in his NFL career.
