Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie defensive lineman Brandon Matterson, No. 70.
Before the Broncos: Matterson (6-2, 295 pounds) spent six years at the University of Texas at San Antonio thanks to a redshirt season and an extra year of eligibility following COVID-19. In his final season, Matterson was named a third-team All-American Athletic Conference defensive lineman after totaling six tackles behind the line of scrimmage, five sacks, five quarterback hurries and a forced fumble in 12 games. Matterson finished his college career with 100 tackles, 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in 59 games.
Broncos tenure: Denver signed Matterson as a college free agent following the 2024 NFL draft. He’s set to compete for a backup role this summer.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Long shot. It would be a big upset if Matterson makes the active roster in 2024. He is buried on the team’s defensive line depth chart going into training camp. Matterson is likely competing for a spot on the practice squad this summer.
