Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at sixth-year inside linebacker Cody Barton, No. 55.
Before the Broncos: Barton (6-2, 237 pounds) entered the league as a third-round pick out of Utah with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019. He began his career as a key special teams player with more than 300 snaps on special teams in each of his first three seasons. Barton then served as an 11-game starter on defense in 2022, totaling 136 tackles, six pass breakups, two interceptions and two sacks.
Barton signed a one-year deal with the Washington Commanders last spring. He was healthy for 13 games last fall and started all of them, totaling 121 tackles and one interception. Barton has dressed for 78 games in his career with 29 career starts on defense.
Broncos tenure: Denver signed Barton to a one-year deal in March after losing Josey Jewell during NFL free agency. Barton is now set to compete with Jonas Griffith for a starting spot in Vance Joseph’s defense.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Likely. Even if he doesn’t start over Griffith in Week 1, Barton would be a top-three linebacker for the Broncos and a key player on special teams. He seems likely to make the active roster in 2024.
