The Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints are finalizing compensation in a trade for coach Sean Payton, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday. Because the coach still has two years remaining on his contract with New Orleans, Denver has to complete a trade to hire Payton.
The Broncos are expected to trade a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick to the Saints in exchange for Payton and a 2024 third-round pick, according to Schefter.
Payton (59) played quarterback in the AFL, CFL and BAFANL from 1987-1988 and was a replacement player for the Chicago Bears during a player strike in the 1987 NFL season.
After playing in England in 1988, Payton returned to the U.S. as a coach with San Diego State. He went on to coach with three other colleges before jumping to the NFL as a QBs coach with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997.
Payton later held the same role for one season with the New York Giants in 1999 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2020. Three years later, he became an assistant head coach and QBs coach with the Dallas Cowboys, a position he held from 2003-2005.
The Saints hired Payton as their head coach in 2006. He went on to win seven division titles and one Super Bowl in 15 years in New Orleans. Payton stepped down following the 2021 season but his contract runs through the 2024 season, which is why Denver had to make a trade.
Payton will be replacing Nathaniel Hackett, who was fired by the Broncos with two games remaining last season after he went 4-11.
