After winning four of their final five games in 2019 and adding several key players this offseason, the Broncos appear poised to compete for a playoff berth in 2020. Many fans in Denver are excited about the team’s future and some members of the national media are buying into the hype.
Broncos coach Vic Fangio is optimistic about the 2020 season but he doesn’t want players to get overconfident before even playing any games. During a Zoom conference call with reporters on June 2, Fangio spoke about managing expectations for the team.
“I have told [chief communications officer] Patrick [Smyth] to make players a little less available to you guys because you all seem like you want to pump their tires,” Fangio said. “They’re suckers for that too, like we all are. We’ve just got to go out and do that. We have a lot of work ahead of us. We did end the season on a high note.
“We do believe we improved our roster, but that doesn’t mean anything. We’ve got a lot of work to do in training camp building up to that first game. I’m confident our guys will come in with the right attitude.”
The Broncos are not expected to have a minicamp this offseason but the team still aims to have training camp start on time in late July. After wrapping up their virtual offseason program, players might not become available to the media again until camp starts. That’s probably a smart move from Fangio.
