Story update: Michigan announced Monday that Jim Harbaugh will remain at the school. See our original post below.
The Denver Broncos’ head coach search appears set to enter the final stages of initial interviews this week.
After previously interviewing Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh (virtually), Denver DC Ejiro Evero, ex-NFL HC Jim Caldwell and ex-Stanford HC David Shaw last week, the Broncos have four more interviews scheduled for this week.
First, Denver will meet with Rams DC Raheem Morris and ex-Saints HC Sean Payton in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The Broncos are said to be the front-runner to hire Payton, but they would need to complete a trade with New Orleans in order to acquire the coach’s rights.
After the Morris and Payton meetings, Denver will interview 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans on Thursday and Cowboys DC Dan Quinn on Friday, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said on Saturday that Harbaugh, Payton and Quinn appear to be the “three main candidates” for the Broncos. Rapoport also seemed to imply Harbaugh was the team’s top choice, and he said there is some “strong mutual interest” between the coach and team.
If Denver does not move quickly to add either Harbaugh or Payton this week, the team will likely hold a second round of interviews next week.
