Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton named Bo Nix his starting quarterback last week after two weeks of preseason action.
Broncos third-string quarterback Zach Wilson wasn’t too surprised by the news.
“I was excited for him,” Wilson said when asked about the decision following the team’s preseason finale on Sunday. “I don’t think it was a surprise too much, obviously. I think he’s had a great camp. I told him I’m excited for him for this opportunity. I really believe that they’re putting him in a good situation.
“I think Sean has done a phenomenal job and the guys that we get to hang out with, starting with [quarterbacks coach] Davis [Webb] and then [offensive coordinator] Joe [Lombardi] and [senior offensive assistant] Pete [Carmichael] and then ‘Johnny Mo’ (pass game coordinator John Morton), you know we have a great offensive staff. And then Bo just continued to keep getting better. So I’m excited to see what he can do, and I think he’s ready for it.”
While he’s not the starter nor the primary backup, Wilson could still end up on the 53-man roster. After Sunday’s game, Payton indicated he would carry all three quarterbacks on the active roster this season. Wilson knows nothing is guaranteed in the NFL, though.
“Exciting, but cut day doesn’t happen until Tuesday, so we’ll see what happens,” the quarterback said.
Assuming Payton was being honest, Wilson will have a spot on the squad in 2024. Given the nature of NFL roster cuts and trade speculation, though, it’s understandable that Wilson isn’t celebrating too early.
