The Dallas Cowboys played the Denver Broncos at home at AT&T Stadium in Week 9, but it looked (and sounded) like a home game for Denver.
There were so many Broncos fans in attendance that Cowboys safety Jayron Kearse called it “embarrassing” after the game.
“It was bad just to hear them chanting, ‘Broncos,’ in our home stadium,” Kearse said. “It goes in with everything about how embarrassing it was today. That was embarrassing.”
That home-like atmosphere helped propel Denver to a big 30-16 upset victory on the road.
Broncos coach Vic Fangio attributed the team having such strong attendance in Dallas to former quarterback John Elway building the fan base across the country in the 1980s-90s.
“[That was] tremendous support,” Fangio said after Sunday’s win. “The Broncos are one of the teams that travel in this league and I think we have John Elway to thank for that because there are fans all over the league that jumped on the Broncos’ bandwagon from the ’80s and ’90s, just like the Packers got all their fans across the nation from the ’60s. The Steelers do it from the ’70s. We do it from the ’80s and ’90s thanks to John Elway.
“I’ve been with a couple of franchises like are like that. The ‘Niners are like that to a degree. The Bears are like that to a degree, but those are big cities that have a lot of transplants all over the country. Denver’s not so, so I think ours has a little bit more oomph to it.”
It’s not just in the stands where the Broncos have gotten the best of the Cowboys — Denver has humiliated Dallas on the field, too. Here’s a look back at the scores for the last eight meetings between these two teams.
2021 | Broncos: 30-16 |
2017 | Broncos: 42-17 |
2013 | Broncos: 51-48 |
2009 | Broncos: 17-10 |
2005 | Broncos: 24-21 |
2001 | Broncos: 26-24 |
1998 | Broncos: 42-23 |
1995 | Cowboys: 31-21 |
That’s right, it’s been 26 years since the last time Dallas beat Denver. The Broncos have been the Cowboys’ kryptonite.
