The Cleveland Browns have added a ton of players to their defense this offseason but, as we’ve learned, general manager Andrew Berry isn’t likely to just stand pat.
One former member of the Browns, Briean Boddy-Calhoun, just became a free agent when San Fransisco needed room for the returning from injury Tony Jefferson. In his three seasons with the Browns, Boddy-Calhoun played both safety spots as well as corner. He played in 43 games and started 21.
Boddy-Calhoun is an undersized player standing at 5’9″ but is built thick at almost 200 pounds. His change of direction skills allowed him to succeed in the slot as well as when tasked with free safety roles.
His three career interceptions all game during his rookie year in the league in 2016 after the Browns claimed him when Jacksonville waived him.
Since then, the former Minnesota Golden Gopher has bounced around to a number of teams but has only played in seven games the last two seasons.
This offseason, the Browns have added Troy Hill and Greg Newsome II to their cornerback room along with the returning Greedy Williams. At safety, John Johnson III joined the team along with the returning Grant Delpit.
Bringing Boddy-Calhoun back would not guarantee him a spot on the team but provide competition especially with his versatility in the slot and safety roles. While Hill, Newsome, Williams, and Denzel Ward seem to have the top four corner spots locked up, there could be two places open for competition behind them.
At this point, Briean Boddy-Calhoun may be more of a “blast from the past” kind of signing. He would not be guaranteed a roster spot but, if he could reclaim his previous Browns form, he could make Andrew Berry’s decision at the end of the roster even more difficult.
