Brian Kelly tied Knute Rockne for the most wins by a head coach in Notre Dame football history this past weekend with a 27-13 victory over Purdue. As great of an accomplishment as that is, Kelly isn’t about to think it means anywhere near as much as other coaches statistics do.
“I can tell you exactly where I sit in Notre Dame history, the coach that won more games that hasn’t won a national championship,” Kelly said Monday ahead of the showdown with Wisconsin, “Where I feel like we’ve done is we’ve played consistent football and we brought Notre Dame football back to its relevance of competing for championships. Each year you raise the bar and you continue to build towards that goal of winning a national championship and I think we have steadily worked towards that consistency, year in and year out.”

The bar has been raised significantly during Kelly’s 12 seasons at Notre Dame but not high enough in many fans or the head coach’s eyes.
“Everything’s judged and rightly so on winning a national championship and I have no problem with that. I knew that coming in.”
