Brian Kelly explains improvement he wants to see in offensive play calling

Brian Kelly explains what he wants to see from play calling and the offense

LSU’s offense is sputtering. The Tigers were one of the most efficient offenses in the country through September and early October, but in recent weeks, defenses got the best of LSU.

Blame doesn’t fall on one single element. The run game is still struggling and QB Garrett Nussmeier isn’t protecting the football. LSU head coach Brian Kelly said it all ties together.

Kelly wants to see a more balanced and complimentary attack across the board.

“We have to find balance in our offense. I don’t want to throw it 50 times a game,” Kelly said.

LSU has several playmakers and Kelly wants LSU to spread the ball around.

“(Aaron) Anderson needs to touch it, (Kyren) Lacy needs to touch it. Chris Hilton looks like Chris Hilton. He’s practicing like he was early in camp,” Kelly said.

LSU has a first-year offensive coordinator in Joe Sloan and Kelly acknowledged the challenges of being in that seat for the first time.

“There’s a difference between making suggestions and making decisions,” Kelly said.

Kelly, who was a playcaller for over 20 years, said he’s doing his best to help Sloan with the knowledge and experience he has.

“And then I’ve got to come at it as a head coach and as a head coach, I want more balance in our offense,” Kelly said, “And that balance has to be struck by how you sequence and call plays.”

Kelly said Sloan understands that, but LSU needs to make sure it consistently checks those boxes.
